1. What is the purpose of Code Enforcement?

The City of Lawrenceville’s Code Enforcement effort is assigned to the Planning and Development Department. Code Enforcement investigates and resolves violations of the City Code, Zoning Ordinance and Property Maintenance Ordinance. Our focus is to gain compliance with the cooperation of agents, occupants or property owners.

2. What is the violation process?

A complaint is received and a case is opened. Code Enforcement Officers then conduct an investigation and take enforcement steps to notify the property owner if a violation is found. If corrections are not made by the deadline, a citation is issued and the cases are presented in court. The process ends when the violation has been corrected and the property is in compliance. 

3. What is a violation?

4. What is a Notice of Violation?

A Notice of Violation is a document issued by Code Enforcement after inspecting a property and finding a violation of the city ordinance. Notices are intended to educate agents, occupants, and property owners with the types of violations, a corrective action, and a corrective date. Notice of Violations are not citations to appear in court but are an effort focused on working with the community to correct violations. The notice will tell you what violation has been found and what you need to do to correct the problem. It will also have a re-inspection date listed. Contact the Code Enforcement Officer listed on the notice if you have any questions about the violation and how to correct it.

5. What is a Citation?

Citations are issued as a final means to correct the violation. If a violation has not been corrected after a follow up inspection, a citation may be issued requiring a court appearance. 

6. How long do I have to correct the issue?

The Notice of Violation will contain a deadline of no less than one and not more than 20 days for compliance. For more information, please contact the Code Enforcement Officer who issued the notice. 

7. I can’t get the code violation corrected by the re-inspection date. What should I do?

8. I have corrected the violation listed on the Notice of Violation. What should I do now?

Contact the Code Enforcement Officer to inform them that the violation has been corrected. The officer will re-inspect the property and close the case. 

9. Who enforces on-street parking?

The Lawrenceville Police Department enforces parking on the street. For more information, the Police can be contacted by calling 770-963-2443.

10. Who should I call about stray animals, animal cruelty, animal bites or dangerous animals?

If it is an emergency, call 911. For non-emergency issues contact Gwinnett County Police Animal Control by calling 770-339-3200, or 770-513-5700 after business hours.
